Aung San Suu Kyi awarded Congressional Gold Medal

April 25, 2008

According to the US Campaign for Burma, both houses in the US Congress have voted unamimously to award Aung San Suu Kyi the nation’s highest civilian honor, the Congressional Gold Medal.

In the entire history of the award, only 30 people from other countries have been granted the award, and Aung San Suu Kyi is the first person to be granted the honor while imprisoned. In an attempt to isolate Aung San Suu Kyi from her own people and from the international community the Burmese generals have kept her under house arrest for over 12 years. The Congressional Gold Medal is a clear sign that this strategy has not worked. While the brutal Burmese military junta can to a certain degree control the Burmese people, they cannot control the international opinion.

The world has not forgotten Burma!
