Independent: The Green Paper

British newspaper the Independent is far from happy with Tony Blair’s plans for a climate bill. Today, the paper launches its own more radical climate manifesto. According to the Independent, a binding carbon reduction target should be determined by Parliament every year and the Government’s performance in delivering these reductions must be monitored by an independent body.

Further measures to decrease the emissions of greenhouse gases:

  • Set annual targets for emission reductions
  • Decentralise energy production
  • Rethink aviation policy
  • Curb road pollution
  • Step up the drive for renewable energy
  • Insist on greener homes
  • Fight inefficiency
  • Reduce industrial emissions
  • Invest in green transport

At the first glance, these measures don’t seem all that radical. Not at the second glance either. Actually it seems more like common sense. If only the governments of the world could see that…
